“Kimjang: Making and Sharing Kimchi,” the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) has submitted for inclusion on the UNSECO list for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, was recommended to be on the list by the Subsidiary Body, a subcommittee that examines candidate properties for the list under the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of ICH. CHA found this fact from the UNESCO website, in which the evaluation result is disclosed. Currently, Korea has 15 ICH elements on the UNESCO List, and it will increase to 16 if “Kimjang” is finally inscribed. The Subsidiary Body examines the candidate elements submitted and judges them into three categories like, to inscribe, refer, and not to inscribe. For this cycle, the Subsidiary Body examined 31 elements in total for the Representative List and recommended 23 to be inscribed, 1 to be referred and the other 7 not to be inscribed. The final decision on “Kimjang: Making and Sharing Kimchi” for its inscription on the list will be made during the 8th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from December 2-7.
