The Cultural Heritage Administration, Korea National University of Cultural Heritage (President Kang Kyung-Hwan)’s Design Institute of Cultural Commodities will hold the 10th anniversary special exhibition 「Two Rabbits」 at Deoksugung Palace (99 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, Seoul) from the 22nd to the 27th.

The exhibition will introduce total of 50 types out of 24 product items including developments representing the past 10 years of the Design Institute of Cultural Commodities and new works reflecting the intention of the coming 10 years. Exhibition-linked seminars and Hanji (Korean Traditional Paper) Jihwa Craft (Natural Dye Craft) DIY experience will be held together.

In the exhibition, 9 products that reinterpret the Clothes Hanger (Hetdae) and Small Table (Soban) in a modern way with the philosophy of traditional Korean house (Hanok), and 6 products that propose new uses for traditional Korean paper (Hanji) in collaboration with Hanji master craftsmen will be introduced. In addition, the products developed over the past 10 years from the Design Institute of Cultural Commodities, which have presented the value of cultural heritage as craft products, will be presented together.

Utilizing the palace’s hall and pavilion, developments from the past 10 years are displayed in the pavilion in front of Deokhongjeon, products using traditional Korean paper (Hanji) are displayed at the Haengrang of Hamnyeongjeon, and new works for year 2022 are displayed inside the hall at Deokhongjeon.

The entrance fee to Deoksugung Palace is 1,000 won, and viewing hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday, and extended viewing hours from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. from Friday to Saturday.

From the 22nd to the 27th, the Hanji (Korean Traditional Paper) Jihwa Craft (Natural Dye Craft) DIY experience will be held together. This event will be held only for those who pre-register (100 people), and the experience is free of charge. The seminar will be held in conjunction with the special exhibition, 『Two Rabbits, Tradition and Innovation』 will be held at the Sema Hall of the Seoul Museum of Art at 2:30 p.m. on the 25th.

This seminar is to understand the phenomenon of traditional culture enjoyed by the public, and it is designed to provide insight on the value of usage of traditional culture by examining cases of extension of tradition as a subject of creation and quest.

The seminar consists of a keynote lecture and 5 topic presentations. Starting with the keynote lecture by Professor Sang-Jun Kim of Kyung Hee University, ‘Tradition and Creation in the Transition of Civilization: An East Asian Perspective’, followed by ‘Preservation and Utilization of Tradition for the Continuation and Expansion of K-Contents’ (by Researcher Munseon Oh of Seoul Museum of Craft Art, Curatorial Research Institute), ‘Make Old Things Hip, “SongguHipsin”’ (Nara Lee, Tumblbuck Outreach Manager), ‘From the Discovery of Cosmetic Relics to Their Use’ (Han-Hyung Lee, research professor at the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Korea National University of Cultural Heritage), ‘Digital Era, Modern Transformation of Traditional Crafts’ (Mi-Seon Lim, Member/Curator of the Craft Industry Promotion Committee), ‘Ultimately, Seeing Tradition is My Direction’ (Youngjin Kim, Creative Director of Tchai Kim), thus 5 topic presentations are scheduled.
