CHA Holds Ceremony to Celebrate the Recent Return of the “Joseon Wangjo Sillok”

In order to inform the Spirit of the return of the Joseon Wangjo Sillok, or the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, and celebrate the repatriation of the precious cultural heritage with the general public, the Cultural Heritage Administration holds ceremonies at the Royal Archive of Odaesan Sago and Woljeongsa Temple, both in Pyeongchang-gun County, Gangwon-do Province, on August 11th. The 47-volume Joseon Dynasty Annals, which were originally stored in the Royal Archive of Odaesan Sago, were illicitly taken by Japan 93 years ago and recently repatriated on July 14th this year. The celebration ceremonies are co-hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Committee on the Return of the Joseon Wangjo Sillok.

The ceremonies largely comprise four parts:
  • Goyuje: a traditional ritual ceremony is held in front of Odaesan Sago at 1 p.m. to inform the Spirit of the return of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty;
  • Unbanrye: the Annals are carried on Chaeyeo, or palanquin for royal objects, from the entrance door of Iljumun to the precinct of Woljeongsa Temple. The procession, starting from 2 p.m., has referred to the Banchado, or detailed drawing on royal procession, in Gukjo Bogam Gamincheong Uigwe, or the record on royal ceremonies of Joseon Dynasty;
  • welcoming ceremony: Unbanrye is accompanied by diverse performances such as crane dance and other performances by Jeongdong Theater. On their arrival in the temple precinct, the Annals of Joseon Dynasty are mounted on the makeshift stage and a ceremony is held to celebrate their return to Korea; and
  • public display: a special exhibition takes place at Woljeongsa Museum for the day, allowing public access to the repatriated Annals of Joseon Dynasty.

These welcoming ceremonies were originally scheduled to take place on July 22nd but have been delayed due to the torrential rains in Gangwon-do Province.

The Cultural Heritage Administration expects it to serve as a good opportunity to arouse public interest in the exported Korean cultural heritage as a whole and thus facilitate the movement for their repatriation.
