Director Kim, Yong-Han from the Cultural Heritage Conservation Science Centre (CHCSC) was elected as a new member of the Council for ICCROM, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, during the 27th General Assembly held in Rome from 14-16. The Council, comprised of 25 members, is a deliberative body on the development and management of the Centre’s programs as well as its budget and election of the Director-General, serving the duties for practical management of the organization. An individual expert can run for the membership if he has built recognized careers and capacity in the field of cultural heritage preservation and restoration, but to be a candidate, he is required to be recommended by his government. Because a member represents his country in his activities and roles at the Centre, his country is regarded to gain qualifications as a Council Member State as well. With Kim’s election, the Republic of Korea has acquired a practical position as well as a higher international status as the 11th contributor to the international organization. The CHCSC will further expand its activities at the international arena by developing training programs in conservation science, linking them to ICCROM projects. ICCROM is an advisory body to the World Heritage Centre launched in 1959 at Rome under the decision made at the 9th General Assembly of UNESCO held in 1956. Currently, its member states are numbered 130.
