For developing manuals on disaster prevention at historic villages, the CHA will jointly hold an international workshop with ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) in Andong City from August 8 to 14. The workshop is for the first study planned under the MOU on disaster prevention signed by CHA and ICCROM earlier this year and will be joined by local and international specialists as well as site managers. The manuals expected to be developed from the workshop are two kinds: the standard manual will contain the basic principles for disaster prevention that includes daily management, quick response to and recovery from disasters, while the on-site manual is for local residents of Hahoe Village, a site inscribed on the World Heritage List last year. The workshop is aimed to make known the value of inhabited historic villages, creating a safe environment for locales with proper disaster manuals, which will result in an overall disaster-resistant system for cultural properties. It is also expected a meaningful opportunity to develop a special instrument for broader historic areas that need specific care for disaster prevention. In collaboration with ICCROM, the CHA will continue developing diverse manuals customized to certain historic sites e.g. temples located downtown or in the mountainous area. The manuals will be shared with the international community and are expected to help raise awareness of the importance of advance preparation for disasters.
