Maritime Cultural Heritage Experts to Gather from around the Country

-The 2023 ICOMOS Maritime Cultural Heritage Forum to Be Held at UNESCO House on June 8 at 2 p.m. -

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (NRIMCH; General Director: Kim Seong-bae), an affiliate of the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA) is joining with the Korea National Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Korea; President: Song In-ho) to host the 2023 ICOMOS Maritime Cultural Heritage Forum on the theme of the “Status and Future Outlook of the Survey and Research of the Maritime Cultural Heritage of Taean.” The forum will be held this coming June 8 at 2 p.m. at UNESCO House (located in the Jung-gu district of Seoul).

The forum was organized based on a memorandum of understanding between the two organizations in April 2021 that was designed to strengthen academic research cooperation on maritime cultural heritage. This is the second forum following last year’s on the theme of “Trends in Research, Safeguarding, and Management of Maritime Cultural Heritage.”

This year’s forum consists of three themed presentations and a general discussion session. The scheduled presentations are The Achievements of the Survey and Research on the Maritime Cultural Heritage of Taean (Yang Soon-seok, NRIMCH), The Maritime Cultural Heritage of Taean and Its Transportation (Mun Gyung-ho, Kongju National University), and The Current Status and Utilization of the Cultural Heritage of Taean (Son Tae-ok, Taean-gun County). The presentations will be followed by a general discussion among the presenters and three selected discussants – Shim Seung-koo (Korea National Sport University), Shin Hee-kweon (University of Seoul), and Jeong Ji-su (Taean Cultural Center). The discussion will be moderated by Lee Ju-heun, a senior curator at the CHA.

The NRIMCH and ICOMOS Korea will continue to collaborate on academic research in the field of maritime cultural heritage with the aim of fostering an international network of experts.
