2022 World Heritage Interpretation Presentation Forum

on 15th-16th November

 

- An off-line event that invites the presentations and discussions of heritage experts

in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention -


Cultural Heritage Administration(Administrator: Choi Eung-chon) and International Centre for Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites under the Auspices of UNESCO* host 2022 World Heritage Interpretation Presentation Forum at Seosomun Shrine History Museum, Seoul.

* International Centre for Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites under the Auspices of UNESCO is a category 2 centre of UNESCO established in January 2022 through the agreement between the Korean Government and UNESCO. The Centre supports the implementation of the World Heritage Convention(1972) and the strategies of UNESCO through research, education and training, and information sharing in interpretation and presentation of World Heritage.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention and the establishment of UNESCO International Centre for Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites(hereafter UNESCO WHIPIC or the Centre), the forum addresses the importance of heritage interpretation that contributes to Sustainable Development. The two-day forum consists of five sessions. With the topic of World Heritage Interpretation for Sustainable Development, the presentations and discussion sessions on the first day will address how heritage interpretation can contribute to the Sustainable Development and actively respond to the challenges the world is faced nowadays.


On the second day, with the topic of Theoretical Research on Heritage Interpretation and heritage presentation: Concepts and Challenges, the presentation session will share the research outcome of the Centre, focusing on the concept and definition of heritage interpretation and presentation. It will be followed by a discussion session which will yield meaningful ideas on how the revisited concepts can be applied to the World Heritage places for better interpretation and presentations on the sites.


Main speakers of the forum include Prof. Neil Silberman(Professor of Anthropology, University of Massachusetts Amherst), Dr. Valerie Magar(Unit Manager, Programmes, ICCROM), and Prof. Mario Santana Quintero(Secretary General of ICOMOS, Carleton University). 


The 2022 World Heritage Interpretation Presentation Forum will be live-streamed via UNESCO WHIPIC YouTube channel. Off-line participants can register in advance from the first week of November at the official website of the Forum. The live-streaming on YouTube is open to everyone without registration.

Cultural Heritage Administration expects that the forum will suggest a new agenda in the World Heritage interpretation and presentation, and give an opportunity for the experts around the world to set constructive goals for the future of World Heritage.
