Essential National Heritage Policy Briefing for Timor Leste Delegation

 - Cultural Heritage Administration introduces the K-Heritage System and heritage protection system to key local stakeholders, including the Ministry of Arts and Culture of Timor-Leste (April 3) -

The Cultural Heritage Administration (Choi Eungchon, Administrator; CHA) will hold a briefing session on April 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the CHA’s conference room at the Daejeon Government Complex to introduce the Korean government's essential National Heritage policies to a delegation of 18 officials from Timor-Leste. The delegation, including Gil Paulino dos Santos Oliveira, Head of the Arts and Culture Bureau of the Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, is visiting Korea for a policy training program.

The briefing is part of a Korean policy training program organized by UNESCO's Jakarta office for Timorese officials. Timor-Leste is a young country in Southeast Asia that is currently pursuing membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a partner of the CHA in the cultural heritage field. The briefing will be attended by key local stakeholders, including Hugo Maria Fernandes, Director of the Chega National Center, Clementino Pinto Amaral, Vice President of the Timor-Leste National Commission for UNESCO, and staff from UNESCO's Jakarta office.

The briefing session will be divided into three sections, including overall policies (International Cooperation Division), significant policies following the transition from the Cultural Heritage Protection Act to the Framework Act on National Heritage (Task Force for the Launch of the Korea Heritage Service), and policies on modern cultural heritage (Modern Cultural Heritage Division). There will be time for Q&A on each topic.

As the CHA is set to become the National Heritage Service on May 17, this briefing session is expected to educate the Timorese delegation on the Korean government’s evolving policies and longstanding protection system for each type of heritage and strengthen their capacity to preserve and manage heritage.

The CHA will continue to implement proactive administration to create new values as the country transitions to the National Heritage System, including striving to establish various partnerships with ASEAN and the international community.
