According to the open-door policy on the Fortress Wall of Seoul (Historic Site No. 10) in Mt. Bugaksan, Sukjeongmoon Gate (the northern gate of the Wall) area has been partly opened to Koreans since April 1^st, 2006. The 1.1 km track starts from Hongryeonsa Temple and it goes all the way up to Chotdaebawee (the candlestick rock) past Sukjeongmoon Gate. The area is to open to foreigners as well from August 15^th this year. Those who want to visit the area can make a reservation on the Internet from August 1^st.

 

The Cultural Heritage Administration made the decision through discussions with related organizations, following the positive responses from 39 foreign diplomats and firm representatives from 22 countries who visited the area on a pilot tour on June 17^th. The decision is in line with the Administration’s efforts to promote Mt. Bugaksan with scenic beauty and diverse cultural heritage as a tourism resource.

 

As access to Mt. Bugaksan is prohibited because of military reasons, foreigners are required to make a reservation on the Internet at least two weeks prior to their intended visit.

 

A reservation form can be downloaded from the websites of the Cultural Heritage Administration (http://english.cha.go.kr) and the Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Properties (http://125.131.116.61/en_main.asp). People only need to fill in the form and e-mail it to bukaksan@fpcp.or.kr.

 

In preparation for the full opening of the site, the Cultural Heritage Administration is placing more efforts to best use of the Fortress Wall of Seoul as a space for history and culture and transform the heritage within the area as tourism resources.
