The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (CHA) has held an on-site briefing session on the recovery of Sungnyemun Gate, which entered its final stages, yesterday on February 14. During the briefing, CHA explained the progress and current status of the project, differences before and after the recovery and future plans set for the national treasure. Initially, the project was scheduled to be completed late December last year. However, it has been delayed because it took more time to dismantle the temporary-built protective fence and build a management building due to particularly cold and snowy weather of Seoul this winter. Currently, about 96% of the work has been completed. After planting grass and plants, paving the ground with granite slabs and creating a plaza as well as building management facilities before April, the gate will be officially unveiled to the public with a completion ceremony on an auspicious day. During the briefing, CHA also explained about the restoration of original walls on either side of the gate, the height of ground, the width of the staircase in the east, the roof shape, traditional roof tiles, dancheong patterns and pigments, the hanging board and disaster prevention system. The interior of the gate was also open to the press. Those who donated pine wood, members of the advisory body, and artisans participated in the project with their masterly techniques and tools also attended the occasion.
