It has been one year since Korea tragically lost its foremost cultural heritage site to arson. February 10, 2008 was a day of infamy, with a single criminal act making international headlines and leaving the nation in shock. On that day, Sungnyemun, more commonly referred to as Namdaemun, was tragically destroyed by fire. The Cultural Heritage Administration immediately set about rebuilding the structure, rectifying emergency response plans, and implementing new security measures to prevent future loss. CHA has since established comprehensive guidelines covering all wooden structural sites. Key personnel and site managers now receive mandatory special training; rapid response teams are in place and ready on short-notice, and firefighting equipment is now on site. On the one year anniversary of the fire, the reconstruction site will be temporarily open to the public, offering visitors a rare chance to witness the historic reconstruction. The opening coincides with a new photo exhibition at the National Palace Museum of Korea illustrating the historic site's remarkable past and its current reconstruction. The exhibition will be held from February 10 to March 8, 2009.
