The Jongmyo Grand Ancestral Rite, a major royal ritual of the Joseon Dynasty, will be held in Jongmyo Shrine on May 2, hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration and Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation and organized by the Jongmyo Grand Ancestral Rite Service Committee. The grand ritual is performed in Jeongjeon (Main Hall) and Yeongnyeongjeon (Hall of Eternal Peace) annually, where the spirit tablets of kings and queens from the Joseon Dynasty are enshrined. Starting with the two-hour-long rite in Yeongnyeong Hall from 9:30am, the ceremony will continue with a royal procession that begins at Gyeongbok Palace at 11:20am. The procession is planned to pass through Sejongno Street and Jongno Street before arriving at Jongmyo after one hour. At 1 pm, the major rite at Jeongjeon Hall will be performed for over one and a half hours. The royal ritual, designated UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in May 2001, is a rare example of traditional rites handing down across the world, given that the rites are served at Jongmyo Shrine, also inscribed on the UNESCO list as a World Heritage site. Visitors can see both tangible and intangible world heritage simultaneously in the ritual ceremony. And the accompanying music and dance add the value of the royal rites that carry the essence of traditional Korean culture. During the annual ceremony, some video clips will be on display to help visitors understand the preparation process of the memorial service and show remaining documents regarding the royal ritual from the Joseon period. Since 2006, the Cultural Heritage Administration and Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation have invited foreign journalists, diplomats staying in Korea and tourists from overseas in order to promote the royal ritual and the core values of Korean culture such as royalty and filial piety that are found in the rite. The ritual is performed once a year on the first Sunday of May.
